Qualities All Good Dentists Have

When I was little, I didn’t like going to the dentist . This was not your average I’m afraid of the dentist type deal. The dentist I saw was loud, obnoxious, and told horrible jokes. He was also not gentle , smelly  , and really didn’t care if he hurt me or not . Unfortunately, there seem to be a lot of dentists like this out there. I’m sure this isn’t the first time you’ve heard of a story like mine .

My bad experience left me very suspicious of dentists in general. I took my time travelling out of town even to find a dentist who was right for me . Through my journey to find a dentist I could go to the rest of my life, I found a general process that I did to find him :

1. It’s a good idea to visit the dentist in person to make an appointment. This is so you can get an idea of who he or she is before they put their hands in your mouth . You want to see for yourself all of his accreditations, so it’s worth going in. It doesn’t hurt to ask quesions either . You can get a feel of how the overall environment of the clinic is like by going in . If he or she lets you, you might even be allowed to sit in while he goes about his daily routine .

2. Check in with your insurance. The last thing you want is to visit a dentist who isn’t covered by your insurance. Double check this before you book your appointment .  Bear in mind that insurance companies work with only top-tier dentists . If your prospective dentist is covered, you can be assured that they know what they’re doing .

3. Ask around. It doesn’t hurt to ask people who are in the waiting room as to what to expect from the dentist . Call up friends and neighbors and find out what they think about their dentist or dentists they have seen in the past. Google isn’t the only place you can check out either. There are sites where people visit to write reviews about local businesses, such as Yelp, that you can check out .

4. Make sure they can meet your needs. Certain patients need specialized needs, such as oral procedures and highly detailed cosmetic work. Do not be discouraged if the first dentist you find isn’t right for you. Keep looking and sooner or later you’re going to get a dentist who suits you .
